1.14.18 Photography Goals & Broadening Horizons

This year, one of my personal goals is to take more photographs. To be honest, I have a Canon Powershot G7X Mark II which is amazing. I sold my Canon T5i Rebel DSLR camera, which was very hefty and too heavy to take on most of my hiking adventures around town. Last year at the Albuquerque International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, I bought the G7X from the Canon booth at the balloon festival. Later on, I traded in two of my other Canon cameras to pay for it (that’s also one of my little hobbies. Selling to upgrade my tech to better tech.) This camera is absolutely phenomenal. Ever since I got it last Fall, I vowed to take more pics with it, and yet, I still find myself reaching for my iPhone all the damn time, which defeats the purpose of buying a nice separate camera. This camera even has WIFI features to upload your pics via your WIFI, which is amazing, but since the iPhone is so damn handy and socially connected at all times, I usually just use my iPhone. Trying to change that this year.

I love going on random road trips or walking through the mountains and just taking pics of the beautiful things I see. I also love taking pics of L.A. and Dallas when I visit multiple times throughout the year, but I’m growing tired of those places in regards to Photography (my family lives in both and I love visiting, but we’re strictly talking about photography here.) This year, I want to travel to some new places mainly for the sake of taking some awesome shots, as well as just the experience of broadening my horizons and traveling. Two and a half years ago, I visited St. John in the Virgin Islands, where my cousin lived at the time, and it was an amazing trip. Other than that, I’ve never truly left the U.S., and I can’t wait to expand my worldview and get out there…

My new goal is to take at least one photo per week with my new camera, and by photo I mean a high-quality purposeful one. I also have toyed with the idea of setting themes for the week. By photography themes, I mean that I choose a keyword for that week, like.. ‘Motion,’ and I go out with the intention of representing that keyword in an artistic and unique way. This will keep my photographic efforts challenged and persistent. I just can’t wait to travel to some new locations and use my weekly keywords… with camera in tow, of course.

Question to my photography and other creative friends out there: Do you have photography or other creative goals for this year? I’d love to hear them.

Have an amazing MLK day holiday and extended weekend!

  1. My goal is to remember to take my camera with me more often while running errands. I’ve seen some awesome things just going to the grocery store and wish I’d had my camera in the car with me!
